This article continues an overview of the functionality provided by the DD-WRT OpenSource router firmware. The previous article can be found at: DD-WRT Firmware on the Asus RT-N16 Router – Part 6, Administration.
The previous article dealt with the different Administration options available, whereas this article will detail the Status configuration options available.
The goal is to understand the different options provided by the DD-WRT OpenSource router firmware and compare it with the firmware provided by Asus when you purchase the RT-N16 device. Also, another popular OpenSource router firmware distribution from the Tomato Firmware group will be reviewed.
Status – Router Information
The Router Information Status screen gives basic information on the current status of the router. Information includes the Router Name, MAC Address, Firmware Version, Uptime, CPU Load Average, Memory Total Available and Memory Amount Free.
Status – WAN
The WAN Status screen shows the details of the Configuration Type which is the information required by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for you to connect to the Internet.
A bar graph keeps track of your WAN traffic – both Incoming and Outgoing.
Status – Local Area Network (LAN)
The local area network (LAN) or internal, private side of your router connection to the Internet is displayed on this screen. Basic information is listed with the currently active clients, and the IP addresses assigned to each by the DHCP Server.
Status – Wireless
Your wireless network (WiFi) statistics are listed on this screen. Details include the wireless radio status, network name (SSID), channel and type of encryption. A listing of the current wireless clients is also included. In our case we’re not using the wireless access from this router.
Status – Bandwidth
Some bandwidth monitoring graphs are available from this screen. The graphs update real-time and are initially blank when you first display the screen. Graphs include incoming and outgoing bandwidth traffic for the LAN, WAN and Wireless bandwidth volume.
Status – System Information
The final status screen is a mixture of some of the data from previous screens. It is a good overview of all the basic statistics from the earlier screens.
Note: The status sub-menu disappears when you click on the “Sys-Info” tab which takes you to this screen. The only way to get back to the sub-menu is to click on the main “Status” menu option.
